What is aagam

In Jain philosophy, Āgamas are the authoritative scriptures that preserve the teachings of the Tirthankaras, especially Lord Mahāvīra. These texts are composed in Prakrit and are divided into various sections dealing with ethics, cosmology, philosophy, and conduct. The Āgamas serve as the primary source of knowledge for Jain monks and lay followers, guiding them in the path of liberation (moksha). They include detailed discussions on concepts such as the soul (jīva), karma, non-violence (ahiṃsā), and the classification of living beings. The Āgamas are traditionally classified into two main categories: the Angas (limbs) and the Upāngas (subsidiary limbs), each elaborating on different aspects of Jain doctrine. Preservation and study of the Āgamas are central to maintaining the continuity and purity of Jain teachings.
