Jainism recognizes a total of 24 Tirthankaras, spiritual teachers who have attained liberation and help others achieve the same. These Tirthankaras are revered as the ford-makers who establish the path to salvation. The 24th Tirthankara, Lord Mahavira, is the most recent and historically documented figure, who lived around the 6th century BCE. Each Tirthankara is believed to have revived the Jain teachings in different time periods, guiding souls towards liberation (moksha).
