TAMO GUN

In Jain philosophy, 'Tamo guna' is one of the three fundamental qualities (gunas) that characterize the soul and its interactions. It represents darkness, ignorance, or obscuration, which hinders the soul's ability to perceive true knowledge (Jñāna) and realize its pure, liberated state. Tamo guna is often contrasted with Jñānāvaraṇīya guna, the quality that veils knowledge, and Ghātiyā guna, which includes passions that destroy the soul's inherent qualities. The presence of Tamo guna leads to spiritual bondage and suffering, as it obscures the soul's innate clarity and consciousness. Overcoming Tamo guna through right knowledge, right faith, and right conduct is essential for the soul's liberation (mokṣa). This concept underscores the importance of dispelling ignorance to attain spiritual progress in Jainism.
